Pedestrian Accident Injuries

Two boys were injured, one critically, after being struck by a vehicle in the City of Oxnard, police officials said.

Oxnard City Police officers stated that the boys, 8 and 9, were walking south in a crosswalk on the west side of the intersection when a 42-year-old driver ran the stop sign at the intersection.

The boys were taken to Ventura County Medical Center, where the older boy was treated and released. The younger boy suffered significant head trauma and remained in critical condition, police officials said. Oxnard City Police officers said that alcohol, drugs and excessive speed were not factors in the crash, and the investigation was continuing.

How to Prevent Pedestrian Accidents

When visibility is low, drivers should slow down and avoid using cruise control, as it can prevent them from making quick stops if needed. They should also keep passing and changing lanes to a minimum and only use their low beams. Patience is important in these situations. Traveling a little slower and being alert for other vehicles and pedestrians can make a big difference if a hazardous situation arises.

Pedestrians also need to keep safety in mind when walking and take responsibility for their own safety – stop all texting or using devices while crossing streets. Focus on all traffic and continue to look for danger until you are safely across the street. They should wear reflective gear and bright clothing and, if possible, only cross the street at marked intersections. Even if they have a “walk” sign, they should look both ways for vehicles, since drivers are more likely to run red lights or accidentally violate traffic laws in inclement weather or just by being distracted.
