Asbestos & Mesothelioma
Since 1993, the personal injury attorneys at Crane Flores, LLP have been helping people throughout Oxnard, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties recover compensation for physical injuries brought about by the negligence and wrongful conduct of others. This includes the onset of mesothelioma and other diseases caused by exposure to asbestos.
What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a fibrous mineral that was used in a host of industrial and commercial applications for much of the 20th Century, well into the 1980’s, when classification of asbestos as a carcinogen led to its disuse and removal wherever feasible. Although, for decades, asbestos has been largely phased out as a building material and commercial product, the diseases caused by asbestos have a long incubation period. The National Cancer Institute estimates that about 2,000 new cases of mesothelioma are being diagnosed in the United States every year.
What is mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer attacking the mesothelium, a layer of cells that lines the membranes surrounding the body’s three main cavities. Pleural mesothelioma attacks the pleural cavity surrounding the lungs; pericardial mesothelioma affects the sac that encloses the heart; and peritoneal mesothelioma impacts the abdominal cavity and organs such as the stomach and intestine.
Asbestos exposure can also cause lung disease, including asbestosis and lung cancer. Airborne, friable asbestos fibers can be inhaled and become embedded in the lungs, causing severe illness over a period of long-term exposure.
Who is at risk of contracting mesothelioma?
People who worked directly with asbestos in a mining or manufacturing capacity are most at risk of developing mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease. However, due to the widespread use of asbestos over the last century, there is a wide variety of occupations where one may have been exposed to asbestos dust and fibers over many years. For instance, people who have worked in automobile manufacturing, shipyards, or in the construction and heating industries, may be at risk. Since the asbestos fibers stick to clothing and can unknowingly be brought home, even family members of exposed workers are at risk for developing mesothelioma.
Legal help with your mesothelioma claim
Mesothelioma can be financially devastating to a family; many victims are permanently disabled and unable to ever work again. Often times, a personal injury claim may be the sole source of future income to deal with long-term medical expenses and healthcare, along with the other costs of living. Unfortunately, mesothelioma cases can be complicated, requiring the injured person to identify the source of exposure and prove the link between the exposure and the cancer or other disease.
