Semi-Truck Flips on US 101 - Arriving Safely at Your Destination

If you pay close attention to local news stories or are one of the many commuters who drives the US 101 freeway almost daily, you may have been aware of the semi-truck that flipped over and blocked lanes the morning of November 10th. Any car accident can be a dangerous event, but ones that involve semi-trucks can become tragic due to the weight and size of the truck – a semi can weigh anywhere from 80,000 to 300,000 pounds when fully loaded.

The accident occurred around 5:00AM when the semi-truck was traveling northbound on the 101 freeway between the Del Norte Boulevard and Central Avenue exits in Camarillo. The truck suddenly changed directions and moved to the right side of the freeway, which caused it to crash into a metal guardrail. It then flipped over and was left on its right side, blocking lanes. It took over seven hours for firefighters and tow trucks to clear the highway.

The truck included a driver and passenger, who were both taken to the hospital after sustaining major injuries from the crash. The cause of the accident is still unknown, but it is yet another tragic reminder of the importance of defensive driving. It’s also a crucial reminder to drive even more carefully while stuck in traffic or delays during these accidents. Becoming distracted while in these types of situations could create another accident. Stay alert and don’t be tempted to check your phone to determine the cause of slow or stalled traffic. It is better to call someone using a hands free device if you need to get directions and find a way around the accident. You can always pull over or get off the freeway at the closest exit if you know you’ll need to look at your phone in order to keep yourself out of harm’s way.

Thankfully, no other drivers were involved in the crash or harmed. There are ways to stay safe while on the road, starting with being alert at all times. Make sure you leave your home on time to safely reach your destination and put all your attention and focus in the road. You don’t want to put your life or others’ lives at risk because of a small distraction. Use hands free devices if you need to get in contact with someone and keep both hands on the wheel – eating your breakfast while driving can be just as distracting as sending a text message.
